MANCHESTER UNITED CONFIRM VAN GAAL EXIT

MANCHESTER UNITED have sacked Louis Van Gaal.  This is the confirmation that we have been waiting for since the news first broke on Saturday evening after United and Van Gaal had won a record 12th F.A Cup. Van Gaal was appointed as David Moyes's successor in June 2014 and led United to a 4th placed finish in the Premier League last season. It looks to be the last job that Van Gaal will have in football before he retires, he had planned to retire at the end of next season at the end of his contract. A statement on the Man United website read: Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward said: "I would like to thank Louis and his staff for their excellent work in the past two years culminating in winning a record-equalling 12th FA Cup for the club (and securing him a title in four different countries). FA CUP FINAL REPORT: CRYSTAL PALACE 1-2 MANCHESTER UNITED (AET)

MANCHESTER UNITED won their first major trophy since Sir Alex Fegurson's retirement.  Jesse Lingard scored an extra-time winner in what looks set to be Louis Van Gaal's final game in charge of the club. In a repeat of the 1990 final it was Crystal Palace who took the lead 12 minutes from time through substitute Jason Puncheon before Juan Mata levelled three minutes later to force extra-time at Wembley for the second time in three finals. Chris Smalling's second yellow card making him only the 4th player to be sent off in an FA Cup Final  at the end of the first added period looked to have swung the game in Palace's favour but Lingard came up with a spectacular volley to secure United's first FA Cup since 2004 where they beat Millwall 3-0. Eagles manager Alan Pardew made six changes to the side that played Southampton in their final Premier League game of the season at Southampton last Sunday.
