Liverpool had the first chance of the game when Jordan Henderson put the ball through for Daniel Sturridge who slide the ball wide.

Liverpool went close again when Glen Johnson decided to let fly from outside the area but David de Gea saved.

United's forst chance of the day came when Robin Van Perise found space on the right of penalty area but his shot was blocked. SAS then worked together to set up Sturridge who put his shot wide.

Joe Allen then had the next chance for Liverpool but his shot from inside the area was saved comfortably by De Gea.

Then the first major talking point of the game arrived Rafael handled in the box as Luis Suarez attempted to slot the ball across the box ref Mark Clattenberg pointed straight to the spot. Steven Gerrard stood up and smashed the ball into the top right hand corner leaving De Gea no chance.

Marouane Fellani then had to have treatment after a clash with Steven Gerrard in which Gerrard received a Yellow card.

Rafeal then picked out Robin Van Persie but his shot was blocked from just inside the penalty area. From the resulting corner Patrice Evra headed over from inside the box.

Luis Suarez then spotted David de Gea off his line but his shot went well wide of the target. Rooney then saw his shot blocked from the following counter attack.

United then got their first and only shot on target when Wayne Rooney burst through the midfield and stuck a shot that the Liverpool keeper was able to beat away.

United started the second half in the worst possible way by giving away another penalty this time Joe Allen was fouled by Phil Jones and Gerrard steppes up and cooly slotted the ball low into the right hand corner.

United captain Vidic then sent a header high and wide from a Juan Mata corner as Old Trafford became very hostile.

Michael Carrick then set up Wayne Rooney who's shot was blocked. Mata then had a go but his shot was also blocked. Fellani then had a shot that went high as United's threat began to crumble.

Jordan Henderson then saw his shot fly over. Gerrard then had a go at sealing his hat-rick but his shot was blocked. Steven Gerrard then shot over from a corner. Wayne Rooney then crossed for Van Persie who's header went over.

United then conceded ANOTHER penalty as Vidic brought down Daniel Sturridge and was sent off but this time Steven Gerrard was unable to convert from the spot hitting the post.

Suarez then got his goal 6 minutes from time as he was layer in by Sturridge and finished cooly past David de Gea.

FT REPORT: MANCHESTER CITY 1-0 TOTTENHAM

MANCHESTER CITY put Wednesday's Champions League disappointment behind them after beating Spurs 1-0 to put the pressure back onto Liverpool in the title race.  (C) Manchester City  City came flying out of the blocks right away. It didn't take long to get in front. Bernando Silva's cross found Sergio Aguero, who had too much space in the box and headed across goal for Phil Foden who headed in from close range after just five minutes.  That was Foden's first Premier League goal on his second ever Premier League start. City continued to create chances but failed to take them. Aguero thought he was in after being played through by Bernando Silva but he was flagged offside.  Paulo Ganzaniga came into the starting lineup as one of five Tottenham changes. He however, was looking fragile. He made a number of errors that only gave City confidence. Trying to chip the ball over a player five yards out was one of a number of things the keeper attempted that c...
