World Cup 2014: England 1-2 Italy

ENGLAND suffered defeat in their first World Cup game in Manaus.

Alex Grace Reports

Goals from Italy's Cladiuo Marchisio and Mario Balotelli either side of a Daniel Sturridge strike were enough to give Italy a 2-1 victory over the Three Lions on Saturday Evening.

England were undone by defensive venerability's in a display that would please Roy Hodgson.

The rue reality is that now England face a scrap to survive when they play Uruguay on Thursday after they were beaten 3-1 by Costa Rica. Whoever loses that one is doomed to elimination at the first hurdle.

Towards the end it was visible that Roy's men were tiring in the heat in the Amazon, but he will hope that not too much energy is lost as England face a another tough encounter in Sao Paulo.

To add insult to injury Physio Gary Lewin was taken off via a stretcher after he broke his ankle when celebrating Daniel Sturridge's goal.

Raheem Stirling put in a brilliant display as England looked dangerous and were a constant threat until they tired in the hot and sticky atmosphere.

However, Italy were still producing moments of brilliance and Andrea Pirlo the man tormented England back in Euro 2012 had a free kick which managed to clip the top of the woodwork on its way over.

Pirlo was involved in the games opening goal as he set up Marchisio who struck the ball from 25 yards through a crowded penalty area leaving Joe Hart with no chance.

England responded less than 2 minutes later when good build up play Wayne Rooney crossed the ball over for Daniel Sturridge to tap in to level things at 1-1. Italy ended the half the stronger side Phil Jagelika headed off the line from Balotelli.

England's problem was again on the left flank as Leighton Baines was unable to prevent the ball getting across into Balotelli who had got away from Gary Cahill to have a simple header to restore the Italian's lead.

Hodgson brought on Everton youngster Ross Barkley and he helped England to continue to create chances but were unable to take them.

Rooney pulled a shot just wide after he was put through by Baines and Barkely ended a great run with an shot that was pushed away by the Italian keeper. He was brought into action again and did well to keep out a Baines free kick as conditions began to take their tole on both sides.

Pirlo nearly had the final say when he's swerving free kick clipped the bar and went over as Joe Hart was rooted to the spot.

EVERTON SACK SAM ALLARDYCE

EVERTON have sacked Sam Allardyce, with Marco Silva set to replace him at Goodison Park.  Allardyce leaves Goodison after just 7 months in charge. Everton finished the season in 8th position in the Premier League table with 49 points, 12 fewer than they achieved last season. Allardyce met with the club's majority shareholder Farhead Moshiri this morning (Wednesday) where he was told that his services were no longer required. This is believed to be have been a decision that come from an Everton board meeting on Tuesday afternoon. It is believed that Allardyce will receive the vast majority of of the final 12 months of his contract which Sky Sports estimate is around £6m. A statement on the clubs website read: "On behalf of the chairman, board of directors and Mr Moshiri, I'd like to thank Sam for the job he has done at Everton over the last seven months. Sam was brought in at a challenging time last season to provide us with stability and we are grateful to h...

Sacking Chris Hughton - Is it the right decision?

Another season has come to an end. This is the period where you will see managers come and go and players come in and depart clubs. The 2018/19 has now come to and end and Brighton finished in 17th place. I believe that if you had offered that to them most Brighton fans would have accepted a third successive season of Premier League football. Add onto that, The Seagulls also made the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Chris Hughton has paid the price for Brighton's poor form in 2019. This decision however, seems extremely harsh. Here is his overall record in charge of the club. Games: 215 Wins: 88 Draws: 57 Defeats: 70 That works out to a win percentage of around 40% that is not bad for a team that's budget is pennies compared to some in the Premier League. Brighton staying in the top flight is an achievement in its self and something that should not be looked over.  Hughton took over at Brighton back in 2014 when the club was struggling at the bottom of t...

Barclays Premier League Preview: Southampton v Everton

Ronald Koeman will return to the dugout this weekend after missing last week's match at Newcastle after having ankle surgery.  He will be hoping that his Saints side can cut out the errors as they welcome Everton to St Mary's this weekend. Southampton needed a Shane Long header 11 minutes from time to rescue a point against Steve McClaren's men at St James' Park last Sunday and the Southampton boss saw plenty of areas for Improvement. 'I wasn't impressed because I was not happy about the first half. Already in the Vitesse match we had too many mistakes the same in the first half at Newcastle." "All the dangers of Newcastle came from faults. The second half the reaction of the players and the physical state in the last 15 minutes was very good because we had the best chances to win the game" "Starting the season with a draw away against Newcastle isn't a bad result bur normally, if we play our level we win the game. " Sou...
