In January 2006 Sven Goran Eriksson announced that he would leave his post as England manager after the 2006 World Cup. McClaren was appointed as his successor and stood up from assistant manager to Head Coach. McClaren's first decision as Head Coach of England was to appoint a new captain  he chose John Terry.

England made a good start to Euro 2008 qualification starting with two wins but then hit a poor run of form and scored just 1 goal in 5 matches. England then went away to Andorra and won 3-0. During this game McClaren and the players were subject to abuse from the fans after a poor performance. McClaren then walked out of the press conference after just two minutes saying "Gentlemen, if you want to write whatever you want to write you can write it because thats all I am going to say. Thank You."

McClaren in last game as England Boss
In May 2007 after Beckham's recall to the England side they went on to win 4 of their next 6 matches which boosted hopes to qualifying for Euro 2008. England then lost to Russia in October 2007 which put the fate qualification out of their hands. McClaren was backed by players and the FA as well as Eriksson despite the defeat.

The results of other matches meant England could only finish 2nd at best if they avoided defeat in the final group game against Croatia who had already qualified as group winners. The match was played at Wembley in November of 2007 England lost the game 3-2 and Russia beat Andorra which meant that England would finish 3rd in the group and miss out on Euro 2008.

Sacking Chris Hughton - Is it the right decision?

Another season has come to an end. This is the period where you will see managers come and go and players come in and depart clubs. The 2018/19 has now come to and end and Brighton finished in 17th place. I believe that if you had offered that to them most Brighton fans would have accepted a third successive season of Premier League football. Add onto that, The Seagulls also made the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Chris Hughton has paid the price for Brighton's poor form in 2019. This decision however, seems extremely harsh. Here is his overall record in charge of the club. Games: 215 Wins: 88 Draws: 57 Defeats: 70 That works out to a win percentage of around 40% that is not bad for a team that's budget is pennies compared to some in the Premier League. Brighton staying in the top flight is an achievement in its self and something that should not be looked over.  Hughton took over at Brighton back in 2014 when the club was struggling at the bottom of t...

Southampton needed a Shane Long header 11 minutes from time to rescue a point against Steve McClaren's men at St James' Park last Sunday and the Southampton boss saw plenty of areas for Improvement. 'I wasn't impressed because I was not happy about the first half. Already in the Vitesse match we had too many mistakes the same in the first half at Newcastle." "All the dangers of Newcastle came from faults. The second half the reaction of the players and the physical state in the last 15 minutes was very good because we had the best chances to win the game" "Starting the season with a draw away against Newcastle isn't a bad result bur normally, if we play our level we win the game. " Sou...
