FT REPORT: MILLWALL 3-4 IPSWICH TOWN

MILLWALL lost out in a seven goal thriller to Ipswich at The Den.

The Lions were looking for their first win of the season against an Ipswich side with a 100% record so far.

Jed Wallace gave Millwall the lead after just 45 seconds as the Lions once again made a first start to a game in the Championship. However, just five minutes later it was all square as Jordan Archer parried Joe Garner's effort into his own net.

Martyn Waghorn on his return to The Den put Ipswich in front before a quick Millwall equaliser through Aiden O'Brien, his first of the season but the Tractor boys would go into half time in front as the Millwall defence failed to handle David McGoldrick after he got passed Shaun Hutchinson, Archer came out and looked to have forced him wide but McGoldrick managed to get the ball across to Waghorn who put the ball into the net despite the best efforts of Byron Webster on the line.

The pace of the first half was taken into the second and Millwall continued to be the better side and got their reward 10 minutes from the end when substitute Tom Elliot poked home from a Jed Wallace free-kick.

That looked to be it, but Tom Elliot was penalised rather harshly for a late foul and from the resulting free kick Jordan Spence headed past Archer to give the away side the win.

Before the game Harris had called for his side to be more clinical and ruthless in front of goal which they were in the first half scoring with both efforts on target however, Ipswich did the same but they had 3 efforts on target all ending up in the Millwall net.

Jordan Archer will have to take the blame for the first goal. The ball was given away cheaply in midfield but Joe Garner was 30 yards out when he struck the ball it should have been a simple catch for the keeper who has underperformed so far this season.

Ipswich's second goal was one that court The Lions out of place. Byron Webster was left to defend one on one with Grant Ward who was too quick for th before it cre Lions defender and Waghorn raced into the box Ward passed the ball to Waghorn who smashed the ball home at the near post, Archer possibly could have got a hand to it but the pace of shot would have beaten him anyway.

David McGoldrick deserves a lot of credit for the third goal, he got the better of Hutchinson and Archer came out to narrow down the angle but he was unable to smother the ball before the striker pulled the ball back for Waghorn who slotted into the net.

Millwall started the game really well and O'Brien was involved in everything, it was his cross that bounced in the right place between the two Ipswich centre-half's before Wallace was able to stroke home the lost ball into the bottom corner.

The equaliser was O'Brien doing what he does best being in the right place at the right time to pick up a rebound and with his back to goal still managing to get the ball in the back of the net.

The home fans were incensed when James Meredith went down in the box and instead of the ref pointing to the spot he gave a free-kick and booked the defender for diving.

O'Brien had another chance when he made space for himself before shooting and it took just the fingertips of the Town keeper to keep the ball out of the goal. Millwall continued to be on the front foot and after Morison's shot deflected for a corner O'Brien's overhead kick ended up in the side netting.

George Saville then shot from 25 yards out drilling a low effort towards goal that the keeper spilled but managed to grab before it creeped over the line.

Neil Harris made a triple substitution brining on Elliot, Fred and Fegurson and it was the the first of those Elliot that got the equaliser when Wallace's free-kick dropped for him at the back post.

It all calmed down and everyone thought that was it until the dubious late free-kick that saw Spence head home.

Sacking Chris Hughton - Is it the right decision?

Another season has come to an end. This is the period where you will see managers come and go and players come in and depart clubs. The 2018/19 has now come to and end and Brighton finished in 17th place. I believe that if you had offered that to them most Brighton fans would have accepted a third successive season of Premier League football. Add onto that, The Seagulls also made the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Chris Hughton has paid the price for Brighton's poor form in 2019. This decision however, seems extremely harsh. Here is his overall record in charge of the club. Games: 215 Wins: 88 Draws: 57 Defeats: 70 That works out to a win percentage of around 40% that is not bad for a team that's budget is pennies compared to some in the Premier League. Brighton staying in the top flight is an achievement in its self and something that should not be looked over.  Hughton took over at Brighton back in 2014 when the club was struggling at the bottom of t...

Ronald Koeman will return to the dugout this weekend after missing last week's match at Newcastle after having ankle surgery.  He will be hoping that his Saints side can cut out the errors as they welcome Everton to St Mary's this weekend. Southampton needed a Shane Long header 11 minutes from time to rescue a point against Steve McClaren's men at St James' Park last Sunday and the Southampton boss saw plenty of areas for Improvement. 'I wasn't impressed because I was not happy about the first half. Already in the Vitesse match we had too many mistakes the same in the first half at Newcastle." "All the dangers of Newcastle came from faults. The second half the reaction of the players and the physical state in the last 15 minutes was very good because we had the best chances to win the game" "Starting the season with a draw away against Newcastle isn't a bad result bur normally, if we play our level we win the game.
