CHARLTON have it all to do in their bid to reach the second tier after they lost the first leg of their Sky Bet League One play-off semi final at home Shrewsbury.
The game was settled by a stunning strike from Jon Nolan his tenth of the season and 20th goal that Charlton have conceded in the final 20 minutes of a game this season.
In a game that lacked clear cut chances the hosts started the better of the two sides and went close early on through both Ajose and Josh Magennis. Jake Forster-Caskey produced a good save from Shrewsbury keeper Dean Henderson who had to parry his effort from outside the box wide for a corner.
Both sides caused problems with set-pieces especially Shrewsbury every time the ball went into the Charlton box it was won by Shrewsbury head. Carlton Morris was causing a lot of problems from those set pieces.
However, failure to convert half chances into anything dangerous cost Charlton dear as a moment of magic from Jon Nolan stunned The Valley and gave the visitors the lead. Sub Stefan Payne did well to nod the ball down for Nolan who unleashed a beauty in off the crossbar to give the visitors the lead. The Hosts huffed and puffed right until the end when Perace's header was cured off the line but they weren't able to equalise. Therefore, meaning that the South Londoners will go to Shropshire knowing they need to score twice to make the Play-Off Final.
Charlton started the better and had a great chance when Ben Reeves crossed for Josh Magennis who had a free header but was unable to direct his header towards goal. Forster Caksey then produced a fine save from Henderson.
From the resulting corner Charlton found themselves on the wrong end of a counter attack as Shrewsbury attacked brilliantly and it opened up for Jon Nolan who couldn't find the finish and saw his shot deflect away for a corner.
Bryn Morris then had a shot from distance that brought Ben Amos into action. The visitors then appealed for a penalty and will feel like it's one they should have had one as the ball came off Jason Pearce's arm but referee Simon Hooper was unmoved.
The second half was largely uneventful and lacked the intensity you would expect for a game that has so much riding on it. That was until the moment Jon Nolan stepped forward and from Stfean Payne's header down scored a beauty into the top corner off the underside of the bar.
Charlton failed to create enough in front of goal as Ajose saw an effort go over the bar from a free kick. Forster Caskey went for goal from a free kick but his tame effort was held by Amos. Charlton's best chance came right at the end from a corner when Pearce's thumping header was cleared off the line.
It ended there but Charlton are still in this tie but will have to come out in the second leg away from home which could leave them open to a counter attack. This game showed there is not much between the two sides and the first goal on Sunday is vital.
