FT REPORT: Scunthorpe United 0-0 Millwall

Chief Reporter Alex Grace reports from Glanford Park.

Millwall have ended their run of three successive defeats in all competitions and kept their first clean sheet of the season after a stalemate at Glanford Park.

Scunthorpe who have won four of the last six meetings between the sides including the 2009 League One Play-Off Final spurred the best chance from the penalty spot in the second half. Paddy Madden saw his effort from 12 yards go over the bar. Both sides hit the woodwork twice in an entertaining    0-0.

Millwall manager Neil Harris made the bold step of dropping long serving goalkeeper David Forde who has been receiving criticism from fans in recent weeks with summer recruit Jordan Archer who made a couple of fantastic saves. Ben Thompson also started in a three man Millwall midfield.

On a hot Saturday afternoon it was Millwall who were feeling the heat after just five minutes when Scunthorpe created the first clear cut chance of the game as the ball was played down the left side to release top scorer Paddy Madden who turned Sid Nelson and was only denied by a fantastic save from Jordan Archer who got down brilliantly to his left hand side to push the shot away for a corner.

After that early scare the visitors settled down and Fred Onlyedinma who scored two goals against Barnsley on Tuesday night settled in well to Millwall's new 4-3-3 formation with him playing further forward in a front three with Morison and Lee Gregory.

As the Lions settled into the game they begun to create a lot chances, firstly, a quick counter attack led by Ben Thompson passed the ball out to Steve Morison on the left hand side but his cross was blocked.

Millwall's best chance of the first half fell to Shaun Williams who was teed up by Lee Gregory after good work from Ben Thompson. However, Williams effort was straight at the Scunthorpe keeper.

The closer we came to half time the more the game opened up as both sides created chances and got themselves into good positions. Scunthorpe then hit the bar just before half time as van Even hit the underside of the bar and Mark Beevers was well positioned to clear.

The second half started just as the first half had ended with Millwall applying a lot of pressure to the home defence. Ben Thompson went close when his effort was a whisker away from going in with the keeper rooted to the spot.

Immediately after that Scunthorpe went straight up the other end and Hakeeb Adelukan found space and let the ball of to former Millwall striker Darius Henderson who struck the ball first time but the shot was comfortably saved by Archer.

Steve Morison then twice went close when from a Tony Craig cross he headed just off target. His second chance came when he looped a volley which landed on the roof of the net.

Millwall then had a sustained period of pressure and nearly forced an own goal when a mixup in the Scunny defence which saw van Veen almost put the ball through his own net.

The home side then had the ball in the net only to see that Madden's effort was ruled out due to him being in an offside position.

Fred drove through the defence and unleashed a shot which the keeper managed to save, the keeper then produced some even more magic to deny Morison and then push Byron Webster's effort onto the bar.

Millwall should then have been awarded a penalty for handball but it would be Scunthorpe who would win their own penalty four minutes later after Beevers founded Mcsheffery. The penalty was taken by Paddy Madden who blew his chance by sending the ball over.

Both sides hit the woodwork in the closing stages.

Sacking Chris Hughton - Is it the right decision?

Another season has come to an end. This is the period where you will see managers come and go and players come in and depart clubs. The 2018/19 has now come to and end and Brighton finished in 17th place. I believe that if you had offered that to them most Brighton fans would have accepted a third successive season of Premier League football. Add onto that, The Seagulls also made the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Chris Hughton has paid the price for Brighton's poor form in 2019. This decision however, seems extremely harsh. Here is his overall record in charge of the club. Games: 215 Wins: 88 Draws: 57 Defeats: 70 That works out to a win percentage of around 40% that is not bad for a team that's budget is pennies compared to some in the Premier League. Brighton staying in the top flight is an achievement in its self and something that should not be looked over.  Hughton took over at Brighton back in 2014 when the club was struggling at the bottom of t...

Barclays Premier League Preview: Southampton v Everton

Ronald Koeman will return to the dugout this weekend after missing last week's match at Newcastle after having ankle surgery.  He will be hoping that his Saints side can cut out the errors as they welcome Everton to St Mary's this weekend. Southampton needed a Shane Long header 11 minutes from time to rescue a point against Steve McClaren's men at St James' Park last Sunday and the Southampton boss saw plenty of areas for Improvement. 'I wasn't impressed because I was not happy about the first half. Already in the Vitesse match we had too many mistakes the same in the first half at Newcastle." "All the dangers of Newcastle came from faults. The second half the reaction of the players and the physical state in the last 15 minutes was very good because we had the best chances to win the game" "Starting the season with a draw away against Newcastle isn't a bad result bur normally, if we play our level we win the game. " Sou...
