FT REPORT: LEICESTER CITY V ASTON VILLA
Sundays Later kick off between Leicester City and Aston Villa was a big game for Leicester fans as there was potential for Ranieri's side to go second in the table. Tim Sherwood opted to rest full back Ciaran Clarke in favour of deadline day signing Joleon Lescott.
And the defender was right in amongst the action from the word go as Okazaki tried to round him and get a shot away only for it to be blocked. This was a warning to Villa that Leicester would be a tough opponent.
However, man of the hour Scott Sinclair, arguably should have scored in the first ten minutes. Agbonlahor drilled a pass across the face of goal but Scott Sinclair sliding attempt saw the ball whistle past the post.
The game was very lively and end to end in the first quarter of an hour and it wasn't long before another chance for Villa came as Carles Gil capitalised on a hesitant Schlupp and managed to pick out Grealish in the box, however it was bread and butter for Kasper Schmeichel in between the Leicester sticks.
Villa looked comfortable and were statistically dominating the play and they used this to their advantage in the 39th minute as they managed to squeeze an attack on the Leicester goal. Moments of madness in the box before the ball was finally moved out but only as far as Grealish who snapped up the opportunity and fired villa head with his first proffesional goal for the club.
Mark Albrighton then was the epitamy of the frustrated Leicester side as he picked up the game's first booking for clipping Carles Gil. Riyad Mahrez's attack was then fizzled out as Lescott tackled the Algerian much to the delight of the travelling Fans.
After the break Brad Guzan was right under pressure as Mark Albrighton found a curling effort which could have snuck into the bottom corner, but the American held well. The pressure was still on though as Schlupp played the ball back to Vardy who's effort went just wide of the post as Leicester tried to organise. However Villa had other ideas...
On 63 minutes Carles Gil unleashed a beautiful strike following a pass from the attacking Agbonlahor. The striker hit the ball first time and it sailed past Schmeichal and into the net.
Gil was then subbed off to a chorus of Villa fans chanting his name as Jordan Ayew came on looking for his first goal for the club. Leicester were also fiddling with their squad as Albrighton and Inler made way for Ulloa and Kante.
Jamie Vardy then came close to getting a penalty after he snatched the ball off the Villa defence and burst into the box. Bacuna brought him down to mass appeals for a penalty as Vardy and Bacunas tensions flared as the two squared up to one another. The appeals were denied by the referee however.
Leicester didn't need a penalty to score though as Mahrez whipped in a corner kick for Ritchie De Laet to knock it just over the line as it bounced on the underside of the woodwork. Goalline technology is a wonderful thing in the eyes of the Leicester fans...
Grealish tried to muster a response for Villa but saw his attempt snuffed out by a stern Leicester defence. Tim sherwood then threw on Gestede for Agbonlahor in an attempt for the former Blackburn forward to produce something as Leicester were gaining attacking momentum.
The comeback was Surely going to be completed as Leicester were dictating the play into the Villa half and Jordan Amavi was lucky to still be on the pitch after a silly Chalenge on Mahrez. And in the 81st it was complete.
Mahrez burst wonderfully down the pitch, evading s squad of defenders before passing to Drinkwater who took no time in picking out an advancing Jamie Vardy who neatly slotted the ball home for the crucial equaliser.
Mahrez had livened up since the first half and almost scored a stunner as he tried to bend one past Guzan from outside the box but his effort was well saved. Shereoods idea of attack them changed to a more defensive approach as Alan Hutton replace Bacuna as they looked to spare another goal.
Nathan Dyer then braved a wonderful header to put the foxes ahead as Riyad Magrez was once again instrumental as he picked out dyer who leaped and beat Brad Guzan to put the ball in the back of the net for what was ultimately the winner. It did come at a cost though as he collided heavily with the keeper.
Leicester City are now second in the premier league after this remarkable comeback.
