FT: REPORT: Charlton 1-1 Rotherham

FT REPORT: CHARLTON 1-1 ROTHERHAM

Brandon Smith reports from The Valley

Saturday's clash at the valley between mid table Charlton and low flying Rotherham ended with the scores at 1 a piece as Patrick Bauer Rescued a point for the addicks.

Going into the game, many would have expected Charlton to have bagged the points after the international break had given the south London side time to allow their injury ridden squad to recuperate.

Rotherham have lost all but one of their opening 5 games going into the campaign and judging by their managers, Steve Evans, body language they were desperate for their first win.

With the match underway it was immediate action in the Rotherham half with Igor Vetokele finding star man Gudmundsonn who's shot from outside the box was saved by Rotherham keeper Lee camp.

The Home side continued to keep the pressure on the Yorkshire club and it was then Gudmundsonn finding Jordan Cousins near the penalty spot but once again Lee Camp produced a fine save to keep it 0-0.

Charlton then began to ease off and their defensive record is always a turbulent one and so it came as no surprise when they had a flurry of chances. However, they all seemed to be weak and were not really testing Nick Pope.

Referee Keith Stroud was then put under the spotlight as his decision to give a free kick to Rotherham in the 36th minute was met by boos from many a Charlton fan. From this he then gave a corner despite it seeming to be a Rotherham player who had made the last contact.

If that hadn't riled Charlton manager Guy Luzon then the goal from Rawson following the corner definitely did. The ball was swung in and a sliding effort from Rawson gave the ball the contact it needed to beat Pope at his far post.

Charlton switched back on after this but half time came before they had a chance to produce anything.

The second half started as did the first with Charlton coming out on top. In between the intense Charlton pressure Rotherham were given opportunities to find the goal and when Jonson - Clarke Harris found a chance to shoot he saw it brilliantly saved by Nick Pope. The keeper was going the wrong way but managed to keep the ball out with his trailing arm.

However striker Igor Vetokele, who had been placed back into the squad after his pre season injury, had been sluggish and so many people welcomed Makienok replacing the Angolan.

The Dane provided an immediate impact after controlling the ball well and taking it out wide before playing the ball across the face of the goal and allowing German defender Bauer to stab home the equaliser in the 67th.

Charlton Continued to search for the goal but couldn't break down the strong Rotherham defence. One of the better opportunities was when Johan Gudmundsonn was able to have a pop at goal from a free kick outside the box but it failed to curve in at the last moment and simply went agonisingly wide.

Rotherham were given a corner late on but failed to bag all 3 points as the match finished as a draw.

FT REPORT: MANCHESTER CITY 1-0 TOTTENHAM

MANCHESTER CITY put Wednesday's Champions League disappointment behind them after beating Spurs 1-0 to put the pressure back onto Liverpool in the title race.  (C) Manchester City  City came flying out of the blocks right away. It didn't take long to get in front. Bernando Silva's cross found Sergio Aguero, who had too much space in the box and headed across goal for Phil Foden who headed in from close range after just five minutes.  That was Foden's first Premier League goal on his second ever Premier League start. City continued to create chances but failed to take them. Aguero thought he was in after being played through by Bernando Silva but he was flagged offside.  Paulo Ganzaniga came into the starting lineup as one of five Tottenham changes. He however, was looking fragile. He made a number of errors that only gave City confidence. Trying to chip the ball over a player five yards out was one of a number of things the keeper attempted that c...
