Sunderland Relegated From The Premier League

Josh King scored two minutes from time to consign Sunderland to defeat and with Hull getting a point at Southampton relegation for the Black Cats was confirmed.

Sunderland needed to better Hull's result to continue their fight against the drop for another week but Josh King's 88th minute strike gave Bournemouth all three points at the Stadium of Light and Hull held on for a 0-0 draw at Southampton which sealed relegation for Sunderland.

Like on Wednesday night Sunderland showed encouraging spells but the lack of quality which has been evident all season cost them dear again. 

Their lack of cutting edge has been a problem all season and is an area where they must invest in next season if they want to return to the Premier League next season. 

Top scorer Jermain Defoe and Fabio Borini went closest for Sunderland while the in-form Josh King hit the bar for the visitors.

The win means Bournemouth have hit the 40 point mark which means they are effectively safe from relegation and look set to compete in the Premier League for a third successive season, while Sunderland have now been relegated from the Premier League for the fourth time the joint most in Premier League history with Crystal Palace and Norwich after spending the majority of the season in the bottom three.

They have won just five games all season and unlike when their rivals Newcastle when they were relegated last season there was no sense of positivity around the ground as the boo's rang out among the sways of empty seats at full time. They have amassed a pathetic 21 points from 34 games which shows there are huge problems. 

They did as they have in many of their games this season have a go but with Jermain Defoe in a bad run of form they lacked a real bite up front. You feel if they had got the first goal it could have been a lot better for them on many occasions this season.

David Moyes made four changes, including the return of Steven Pienaar his first appearance since February 11th the hosts looked nervy in defence, a corner went wide in the first minute before King headed a Fraser cross just over.

Sunderland did threaten through Borini's swerving shot was saved by Boruc and then Defoe fired over when he should have done better. King then was deseoeratly unlucky too see a perfect chip come off the underside of the bar. 

Sunderland's best chance fell to Defoe who shot straight at Boruc after N'Dong had headed the ball over the Cherries defence. Defoe saw a shot go into the side netting before King's turn on the shot was blocked by teenager Donald Love.

There was further chances at each end before Pugh curled wide and Boruc had to make a great save to deny Borini. The Cherries keeper was called upon again to save from sub George Honeyman at his near post before keeping out a first time shot from Borini. 

Sunderland committed men forward in the closing stages and that was their undoing as Fraser crossed the ball for King to tap in. Southampton's last minute penalty award gave the home fans some final hope but failure to covert that penalty gave Hull the point they needed to condemn Sunderland to the Championship.

Sacking Chris Hughton - Is it the right decision?

Another season has come to an end. This is the period where you will see managers come and go and players come in and depart clubs. The 2018/19 has now come to and end and Brighton finished in 17th place. I believe that if you had offered that to them most Brighton fans would have accepted a third successive season of Premier League football. Add onto that, The Seagulls also made the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Chris Hughton has paid the price for Brighton's poor form in 2019. This decision however, seems extremely harsh.
