FT REPORT: TOTTENHAM 1 MANCHESTER CITY 0

Tottenham will take a 1-0 lead into the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final after beating Manchester City 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Heung-Min Son scored his second goal at Spurs's new home to give them the advantage heading into next weeks second leg.

Manchester City were awarded a controversial penalty 11 minutes in after VAR ruled Danny Rose handled the ball inside the penalty area. Sergio Aguero stepped up but saw his spot kick saved by Hugo Lloris.

Spurs however, have been dealt a massive blow. Harry Kane was forced off and left the ground on crutches with what like a reoccurrence of an ankle injury that has twice caused him problems this season.

Despite this the home side ploughed on and found their goal through Son. His unwillingness to give up after a bad first touch ended with him striking the ball low under Ederson's body and into the net.

What it all means is that Tottenham will take a narrow first leg lead to the Etihad aiming to reach their first European semi-final since 1962. For City they will need to come from behind to keep their hopes of an unprecedented quadruple alive.

The debate over handball and how to judge if it should be a penalty or not resurfaced after just 11 minutes. Danny Rose blocked an effort from Raheem Sterling that originally the referee said no penalty to. Step in VAR. The review team where on to it and decided to take a look, they alerted referee Bjorn Kuipers who then decided to reverse his decision.

Sergio Aguero took the responsibility but Hugo Lloris saved his penalty, his third such save of this calendar year.

The hosts had the best opportunity of the half after that. Harry Kane found himself free 12 yards out but could only force Ederson into a good save, when he perhaps should have found the net.

Spurs don't just have the Champions League to worry about but also the battle to be in it next season and they may have to do that without Harry Kane. The striker had to helped down the tunnel with what looked like an ankle injury. Kane missed the first six weeks of 2019 with the same injury. After the game Maurico Pochettino admitted that the England captain could miss the rest of the season "Yes, we need to check tomorrow but it looks the same, a similar issue."

It was a game that did not quite live up to it's billing and with the second half coming to a close Spurs found a way through. Christen Eriksen played through Son. He did superbly well to keep the ball in play after a heavy touch to cut inside and fire past Ederson. City were lacklustre and couldn't find what would have been a vital away goal. They must come from behind if they are to keep their quest for four trophies alive.

FT REPORT: MANCHESTER CITY 1-0 TOTTENHAM

MANCHESTER CITY put Wednesday's Champions League disappointment behind them after beating Spurs 1-0 to put the pressure back onto Liverpool in the title race.  (C) Manchester City  City came flying out of the blocks right away. It didn't take long to get in front. Bernando Silva's cross found Sergio Aguero, who had too much space in the box and headed across goal for Phil Foden who headed in from close range after just five minutes.  That was Foden's first Premier League goal on his second ever Premier League start. City continued to create chances but failed to take them. Aguero thought he was in after being played through by Bernando Silva but he was flagged offside.  Paulo Ganzaniga came into the starting lineup as one of five Tottenham changes. He however, was looking fragile. He made a number of errors that only gave City confidence. Trying to chip the ball over a player five yards out was one of a number of things the keeper attempted that c...
