DERBY DAY in the Second City belonged to Aston Villa as they made it seven straight league wins to move up to second in the Championship against Birmingham at Villa Park.
Albert Adomah gave the hosts the lead with his 13th goal of the season and from that moment on they didn't look back and nine minutes from time they doubled the lead with a stunning half volley from Connor Hourihane his 8th goal of the season. Birmingham's misery was compounded in stoppage time when N'Doye was sent off for a second yellow card.
Villa started the game the better side and created the better chances including one from Scott Hogan which cannoned off the crossbar. The Blues also hit the woodwork just before half time as Sam Gallagher beat John Terry for pace and cut inside the box but his shot came off the far post before he sent the round over the bar.
Steve Bruce who has a very difficult week on a personal level made one change to his side with Mile Jedinak coming in to play in front of the back four, there were two changes for Birmingham with Colin and Maghoma coming in for Jota and Grounds.
Villa looking for a seventh straight win showed their intent right from the get go in the second half. Robert Snodgrass who crosses the ball that defected off Harly Dean and had to be tipped over the bar by the keeper.
Jack Grealish who was outstanding from start to finish was the architect as Villa took the lead on the hour mark. It was his ball to Adomah and he did brilliantly to cut inside and his shot deflected off the post and in to give Villa the lead.
Victory was confirmed for the hosts with nine minutes left when Conor Hourihane struck a beautiful half volley from around 25 yards that left the keeper with no chance at all.
NDoye then saw red towards the end as he was given a second yellow card for getting into a tussle with John Terry. That ended the derby on a rather sour note for Birmingham on an already tough afternoon.
